Title: Life at home.
Description: Mpreg arc. I wrote this for Race's birthday, and it kept growing... and growing... Warning for MPreg, of course. Set in a world where time compression didn't end, and Squall's team failed in their battle against Ultimecia. More set after they've come back.
Pairing: seifer/squall
Rating: PG
Word count: 691
Notes: Drabbles/ficlets tend to be written at work, so they're not as lucid as some of my writing. They're also completely unbeta'd unless otherwise stated, please forgive this.

“I’m tired, but fine.”

Seifer regarded me as though he wasn’t going to believe me for a moment and then sighed. “okay, okay. Just… just take it easy after dinner.”

I was taking it easy. I’d been in bed since 12 noon and had only gotten up when I knew Seifer and the kids would be home and therefore was time I made dinner. Seifer could cook, but with my current condition his stuff was too spicy for me right now. So it was mostly off the menu until I’d had the baby. Seifer didn’t know the difference between mild and burning my tongue off unless I was supervising.

I was just finishing the sauce for the spaghetti when he’d arrived home. Of course I’d had the take it easy lecture as soon s he was through the door.

Caden and Caralyn were in their bedrooms. Leila was in the living room drawing something instead of doing her homework. Everything was so normal that it always scared me. I was always waiting for the other boot to drop these days.

Changed into a pair of jeans and a ratty old tee-shirt, Seifer came back to the kitchen. I’d claimed a chair at the pine table, sitting with my feet up quite happily listening to my radio. Not a music station. I’d heard enough characterless pop songs and pretend rock and none of them were even half as good as my son. So I’d switched my preferences to a mostly drama and comedy station. Seifer thought it was hilarious that I, of all people, liked to listen to comedy.

“Dinner will be ready soon,” I smiled. He kissed the top of my head, gave my shoulders a quick rub. To think I had another five months of being babied.

“Want a drink?” he asked, playing with the ponytail I’d drawn my hair back into. I always let it grow when I was pregnant. After Leila, I’d hacked it back shorter than Seifer’s but it was too awkward to face many people while I was… suffering.

“Chocolate milk.”

He chuckled and headed for the fridge to pour me a glass. If anything I was getting plenty of calcium. Seifer was sure we were going to get another boy. I thought it was a girl. I craved dark chocolate with Caralyn, white with Leila and anything with this one. Selphie had sent me a triple chocolate cheesecake. None of the kids had gotten a look in.

He bought me a glass and touched my shoulders gently. He was always touching me lately, reassuring me or himself. Either way, I kinda liked it most of the time, but sometimes when I was aching, I hated it. Especially at the end of a long day.

Sometimes I missed being intimate with him. We hadn’t really done anything but cuddle since not long after I’d fallen pregnant again. I was jealous of Quis – she loved being pregnant and did it perfectly. Glowed, floated, never threw up. Fuu was just as jealous as me, struggling just like me. She was due a month before I was.

“Want me to make some garlic bread? Salad?”

“You do the bread and finish the spaghetti. I’ll make the salad.” I patted his hand, letting him know it was okay to stop touching me.

He let go to do what I’d asked, glancing back at me as he cut up the bread I’d left out for that job. He had his thinking face on, the little boy lost look. “You don’t want to go out for your birthday, right?” I shook my head. I didn’t like going anywhere but my father’s or friends while in my current condition. “I was going to suggest a drive in movie. They’re doing them in town on Friday nights now. No kids, just us?”

To be honest, I wasn’t in the mood. I’d have rather stayed home and watched something where I had our couch to nap on, but catching sight of that little boy lost thing again, I lost any chance of telling him no. With a sigh, I smiled for him and nodded. “Okay.”
