He was struggling to breathe.

The hand placed on his bare chest – damn the general had slender fingers – seemed to suck all of the breath out of his lungs, leaving Zack gasping as though he’d just gone ten rounds with Sephiroth. He hadn’t, it had been a simple touch and he was acting, and feeling, like a schoolgirl around her first crush.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the hand. He had to watch the way the pale fingers looked against the darker tan of his chest and the perfectly manicured nails that shone like glass pressed ever so lightly into his skin. He had to see the very faint stroking of his chest by Sephiroth’s forefinger, an almost indiscernible movement that was sending shocks of electricity and hunger through Zack’s body.

“I have a girlfriend,” Zack stated. His voice was calm, much calmer than he felt.

Sephiroth chuckled softly; a sound that made Goosebumps rise on Zack’s exposed skin and made the hair on the back of his neck stand up all at the same time. Sephiroth did not chuckle. Sephiroth did not even have a sense of humour. When Sephiroth chuckled, the appropriate response was to scatter.

“I love her,” Zack pressed, finally looking up and finding himself caught in Sephiroth’s poisonous green gaze. Why the hell did he have green eyes? He was SOLDIER; SOLDIER always had blue eyes, not green. Even so, he couldn’t deny the Mako glow of them, or how sinful Sephiroth’s lips looked as they curled up into one of his wicked smiles.

Zack forced himself not to back down. His knees threatened to buckle beneath him, and it was only sheer force of will that kept him in place.

“I’m not going to stop you loving her,” Sephiroth spoke at last, his gaze flickering down to his hand and back up again, meeting Zack’s eyes. His pink tongue darted out, sweeping across his lips to moisten them and Sephiroth tipped his head. “This is just… part of training.”

Sephiroth’s hand moved lower, slowly. It stopped on Zack’s abs this time, and to his shame Zack realised that he was disappointed. Part of training. Getting all that adrenaline going and then the training was over, leaving him lost. “Just part of training,” he echoed dumbly.

Sephiroth pushed him back hard, slamming him into the lockers. If that wasn’t enough to take his breath away, Sephiroth was on him, kissing him. It was purely animal, the kind of kiss he couldn’t imagine giving Aerith at all but echoed in every single cell of his body. Fisting his hands in deceptively soft silver hair, Zack gave in.
