"Hey. Coffee."

Squall opened his eyes to look at the paper cup. He took it carefully, and settled it on the tray over his bed. "Um..."

"Cream. You only take brown sugar if they have it, and they didn't."

"Have you always been able to read my mind or is that a recent development?" Squall asked, his tone teasing. He turned the cup, not noticing the way Seifer looked at him, surprised.

"Oh I've been able to do that for a long time. - I got you a couple of books, I'll bring you some more the next time I come in to visit, okay?"

"Okay, Squall nodded. He picked up the first book when Seifer put them on the tray, examining the back to read the blurb. He looked up at Seifer. "Thanks. You've been really helpful."

"No problem baby. Haven't you had any other visitors?" Seifer frowned. At least his next port of call was going to let him work out some aggression. Squall was confused and someone should have been with him at all times. "The doc said you woke up yesterday."

"No... Well, there might have been someone here yesterday but I slept a lot. I don't remember much," he murmured scowling. "That goes without saying right now, right?"

""I'll check that out too. Doc said you've been here almost a week." Seifer sat on the edge of the bed, noting that while he'd been away, Squall had acquired an IV drip. "And you were in a car crash, but you're right about the gunshot wound. I'll keep asking them to find out more, okay?"

Squall smiled, and nodded. "Thanks. Again."

"Like I said, no problem. Just wish I could do more."

Squall sipped from the cup, watching Seifer. "I can't talk about anything without asking you a question or a favour. I feel bad about that."

He couldn't stop a bitter chuckle. Seifer reached out, ruffling squall's hair affectionately. "It's okay, squirt. Just get yourself healed up and you can come make me dinner to repay me when you're back on your feet. Deal?"

"I cook?"

"Hyne yes. You taught me, in fact. You used to cook for me a lot," Seifer realised he was probably giving away more than he was comfortable with a moment too late. He covered it quickly, speaking again before Squall could question him further. "I need to get over to Garden before their curfew. See if I can find out any more. Maybe I can come by and visit you tomorrow too."

"I'd like that, If you have time," Squall finished the cup of coffee and set it back on the tray. "Did I work at Garden, then?"

"Yeah. Look, I'll tell you more when I know what's going on, but I gotta run. G'night, Squirt," Seifer stood, heading for the door quickly.

"How long since we broke up?" he heard Squall's voice, soft and quiet behind him.

Closing his eyes again, Seifer paused in the doorway. "About four months."

"Thanks for doing this."

Seifer simply slipped out into the corridor.
