By the time I woke up, it was early afternoon and I was alone. The headache had descended to a dull roar rather than an ear-splitting scream. I was on my side of the bed with the pillows supporting my bad shoulder and a fleece blanket pulled over me. I was still wearing my club clothes except for my belt and my boots. Seifer must not have wanted to undress me with Selphie around.

My whole body felt sluggish as I slid my legs over the side of the bed and forced myself to my feet, almost falling over. I needed coffee before anything. My shoulder ached as though I'd been training ten hours straight with my blade and I was just hoping to Hyne that I hadn't screwed it up.

I staggered to the kitchen. Seifer was at the breakfast bar, reading the paper and when I reached the doorway, he took one look at me and reached over to switch the coffee pot on. That was a bad sign.

"You look like hell, baby." Seifer folded the paper and put down, confirming my suspicions. "Come and sit down."

I sat opposite him, resting my good arm on the surface and slowly lowered my head to my arm.

"Doc said it'd take a day or two to get all of it out of your system even with the remedy and that you'd feel drained and tired, but it'd pass. You okay?"

When I wanted him to help, he hung back. When I didn't want him to, he was always there. I wasn't sure if he was fickle or I was. Every word was a little knife in my head. I tapped the breakfast bar and he dug out my pain killers and filled a glass of water for me. By the time I'd managed to take them, he was making the coffee. "Afternoon," I croaked.

"Love you when you're cranky," he grinned. "You okay?"

"C'mere." I beckoned to him and he slipped around to get close to me. I grabbed him by his shirt and dragged him over so I could hug him. I desperately needed to feel him for some reason. He pushed my head down to rest on his chest and wrapped his arms around me, stroking my hair. I'd never been this weak. Not since the first time I'd picked up a blade.

"Squall?"

"Softer."

"What's wrong, baby?" he asked, his voice was barely above a whisper. I couldn't put words to my feelings. I wasn't afraid of being weak I just... If I couldn't protect myself, how could I protect Seifer?

"Nothing. Just..., nothing."

"You're still not getting out of taking more precautions when you're out, squirt. Need to talk to Irvine about that stuff."

"Let's save that argument for later, I'm too sore for that just yet."

Bowing his head, he kissed my hair and I shivered. There was no way I was going to take on a body guard but I'd let him think that he could win for now. Just so long as I could keep holding onto him.
