Title: What you didn't know you'd miss.
Description: Sequalish thing to the No More Blue Yules fic. There's a chunk missing here but basically - Rin has a couple of kids, and one of Squall's last missions was to check out the eldest as a possible powerful knight. On seeing the boy, he realised that it was very likely that the kid was his son. Seifer was doubtful but...

“Excuse me?”

I set the tray of glasses down on the pile and turned to see whoever had spoken. I was glad I’d set the tray down when I saw the kid. “Yeah?”

“I’m looking for someone called Squall? I was told he be here,” the kid looked around as though he was going to find an answer or Squall was about to pop out of the woodwork somehow.

I’d once told Squall there was a chance the kid wasn’t his, but now I’d changed my mind. He had Rin’s dark hair but his blue grey eyes and features were almost all Squall. It was like looking at my lover when he was twelve, before he’d started training with his gunblade. Skinny thing. “Mari, I’m gonna take this kid upstairs. Yell if it gets too busy for you guys to handle.”

“Sure thing boss!” Mari saluted with one hand and uncapped a bottle of very blue girly drink with the other.

The kid was scowling – probably at being called a kid – and Hyne help me if that wasn’t one hundred percent Leonhart pissyness on his face too. “Follow me,” I smiled and headed for the door that lead to the apartment above the pub. I unlocked the door and beckoned him after me. He looked unsure so I called out to Squall.

“Kitchen!” Squall yelled back and the kid lit up at hearing that voice.

“You got a visitor! It’s... What’s your name, kid?”

“I’m not a kid, I’m sixteen. My name’s byrne,” he folded his arms and pouted. I struggled to keep from cracking up. So being awkward was a genetic trait.

“Your name is Elliot,” Squall had appeared in the kitchen doorway, wiping his hands on a towel. “Byrne is your middle name and if you so much as laugh Seifer, I’ll kick your ass.”

The kid blinked, and then blinked at me. “Seifer... like Seifer Almasy?”

Fame is such a chore. “Yep. As in Sorceress’ knight,” I grinned at him and closed the door after us. “You want a drink kid? It’s cold out there.”

“It’s okay, he won’t hurt you,” Squall had lost the towel and was heading for the two of us. “He’s my partner, he’s pretty much harmless now.”

I clutched my heart and staggered towards him. “Hyne, another like that and I’ll be finished for good!”

He caught me in one arm and kissed my cheek. “I’ll take care of you after my shift, I promise. Make me a coffee.”

The kid was watching us, wide eyed and pale as hell. I hoped I hadn’t just outed Squall to his kid, that’d be a hell of a way to find out. “Coffee?” he asked softly, looking a little more hopeful. I wasn’t going to give him the same coffee-coffee I’d given Squall the first time he’d turned up looking like a popsicle in a leather jacket though. As I made for the kitchen, I heard the kid whisper “So you’re gay? That’s why you and my mom split up?”

“Your mom and I grew apart, Elliot. Seifer and I... we started apart and just grew closer. It’s the way things work sometimes.”

I made them coffee and left them talking so I could go back to the bar. Squall appeared in time for his shift and kissed me as he headed past to do his stint in the kitchen, telling me that he and the kid were going to do a test to confirm that he was the kid’s dad before they figured anything out.

My shift finished before Squall’s and I bought the kid down to eat with us in the bar. He was quiet, I expected that, but I didn’t expect him to like me. I told him stories about his dad while we waited for Squall and embarrassed squall even more when he finally joined us.

Elliot ended up crashing out on the couch after I made him call his mom to let her know he was okay. From what I could overhear, she was pissed and wisely he didn’t tell her where he was. I liked him, which made it all the harder knowing that we were going to have to tell him to go home sooner or later. Probably sooner, neither of us were prepared to deal with a highly pissy ex girlfriend sorceress with a grudge.

I caught Squall watching him sleep, looking sad. And if Squall looks sad, it means he’s pretty devastated on the inside. Half coaxing, half dragging the little bastard to bed with me, I managed to get him to tell me what was on his mind.

“I swore if I ever had a kid, I wouldn’t leave him like my dad left me. Now look at him. He’s sleeping on our couch because I didn’t have the balls to confront Rinoa back then.”

“It wasn’t about balls, you would have put him in danger and you know it. He’s old enough to make his own decisions now and I bet he’s stubborn enough to as well. You made it up with your dad, remember?” I stroked Squall’s hair which always seemed to help at least a little. He sighed, leaning into it and looking worried. “Just find out if he’s your kid and then we’ll worry about it. And argue with Rin about it.”

“You’re right,” he murmured, flopping an arm over me and snuggling as close as he possibly could.

“Just one thing though. Elliot? Byrne?” I couldn’t hide a snicker, Rin had really been desperate to distance the kid from Squall “former ice princess” Leonhart to give the poor thing a name like that.

“It’s not like I was involved.”

“Poor kid,” I said, rubbing Squall’s back. “Byrne’s bad enough but Elliot? Where’d she come up with a weird name like that?”

He shrugged, nuzzling against my throat and sighing his deep, long suffering sigh. “How will I tell dad about it?”

“Same way you told him about me. Turn up, look sheepish and shrug.”

I just read 'no more blue yules' and after browsing your tag list I found the sequel =)

First to 'nmby'- I'd love it, if there were more stories like these.
I found it through the sxs group at LJ (which I had abadond for some time ^_^") and I'm really glad I did.
The fandom is a little bit dead and therefore I'm always glad as soon as I discover good stories.
Later on, I will browse your stories more, so watch out =)

I loved how you tried to describe how things have changed, how both of them changed.
About the sequel: Squall is still in deny, about his son, isn't he?
I mean, if even Seifer knows.. well, whatever.
Is there going to be a sequel of the sequel? ^_~

I was just wondering where I could read the original fic and other full stories?
